On Tuesday, 2 December 2025, Bratislava University of Economics and Management had the honour of welcoming H.E. Ian Devine, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland to the Slovak Republic. His visit formed part of the university’s effort to strengthen its academic and international relations and offered students of the English study programme a unique opportunity to meet a high-ranking diplomat.
H.E. Ambassador Devine delivered a specialised lecture within the course International Trade on the topic “How to maintain an open economy in a complex and uncertain global environment?”. In his lecture, he addressed current global challenges in international trade, geopolitical shifts, the importance of economic openness for growth and innovation, as well as Ireland’s own experience as one of the world’s most open and innovative economies. The presentation sparked a dynamic discussion, and students appreciated the opportunity to gain insights directly from diplomatic practice.
Before meeting with the students, H.E. Ambassador Devine was received by the Rector of BUEM and the Vice-Rector for Business Development and Digital Transformation. During the meeting, the university leadership presented the institution’s development activities, international programmes, and strategic direction. The discussion also focused on opportunities for cooperation, particularly in building partnerships with Irish universities, supporting student and staff mobility, and initiating joint educational activities.
The ambassador’s visit brought valuable insights to both our students and the university, confirming the importance of cultivating international relations within the academic environment. BUEM will continue to actively work on creating new opportunities for collaboration with international partners.
