Principles of admission procedure

Admission to studies at the Bratislava University of Economics and Management

  1. The admission procedure is carried out without entrance exams based on the previous study results without personal participation of the applicant for studies.
  2. Each applicant applies for studies at BUEM by submitting an application form, where it is specified which study program and form of study he is interested in, in due time.
  3. The application of each applicant for studies at BUEM must be submitted in Application form and on the official form of the school which the electronic application generates automatically.
    This form must be printed out, signed by the applicant and sent with the attachments mentioned below to the address:

  4. Selection of applicants in the admission procedure is made by the admission committee appointed by the rector of the school on the basis of evaluation of study results of previous studies completed. Applicants are ranked according to their grade average and in this way a rank list of applicants proposed for admission is prepared. When ranking applicants for part-time studies, current practice and job title are also taken into consideration. In case of need, interview in order to check additional requirements is organized.
  5. The decision about acceptance or non-acceptance of applicants for studies is made by the rector of the BUEM on the basis of principles approved by the Academic Senate of the Bratislava University of Economics and Management and on a proposal of the admission committee.
  6. The decree about the result of the admission proceedings will be sent to applicants for studies by the BUEM within 30 days from the meeting of the admission committee. It contains the decision, its reasoning and instructions on how to apply for an enquiry to be made into the decision.
  7. The school is responsible for accuracy of data and their protection. Applicants' personal data are used only for the purpose of the admission procedure and must not be available for other purposes.

Criteria for acceptance of applicants

Bachelor’s degree studies

  • The basic requirement for the applicant’s admission to the BUEM is successfully completed secondary education with a school-leaving examination.
  • Required annexes to the application form for Bachelor’s degree studies are
    • notarized photocopy of the school-leaving certificate,
    • structured curriculum vitae,
    • original receipt of payment of the fee for admission proceedings
  • An applicant who will complete secondary education in the ongoing academic year is required to submit the school-leaving certificate upon receiving.

Master’s degree studies

  • The basic requirement for admission to Master’s degree studies is successfully completed Bachelor’s degree studies in the study programs Public administration and Management of small and medium entrepreneurship or in related study programs from the study fiesd Economics and Management.
  • Applicants from other universities will be accepted for Master studies after passing differential exams from selected subjects of the compulsory basis of the study program which they are interested in.
  • The rector of BUEM will decide about differential exams on the basis of the recommendation of the director of the institute concerned. The fee is charged for performing differential exams in terms of the valid Directive on fees of BUEM.
  • Required annexes to the application form are
    • notarized photocopy of the Bachelor diploma *,
    • verified transcript of all grades including state exams and total grade average*,
    • structured curriculum vitae,
    • original receipt of payment of the fee for admission proceedings.

The certificate on health qualification is not required.

Doctoral degree studies

The admission procedure shall be held on the basis of the entrance examination in front of the admissions committee, which is appointed by the Rector of BUEM on the proposal of the chairman of the trade union commission.

  An applicant applies in writing for one of the listed dissertation topics, which can be applied for within the admission procedure.

The entrance examination is performed in the accredited study programs in a combined form and consists of:

  • a professional part related to the chosen study program and selected dissertation topic that the applicant applies for in writing, in which he prepares a framework project in the form of theses, in the range of 10 A4 pages with approximately 20,000 characters in the state language or in English;
  • English for evaluating the applicant's ability to communicate in a foreign language;
  • considering the fulfillment of other conditions determined by the school, including a covering letter focusing on the perspectivity of doctoral studies for the    applicant;
  • possible participation in scientific research activities, publishing in a scientific/professional journal etc., evidence of passing the relevant state language exam that the candidate proves

An applicant applies to BUEM by submitting an application form for the chosen form of study and chosen study program within the set deadline. Applications shall be submitted from May 15th  to August 21st of the current calendar year. In justified cases BUEM can set a new deadline. An applicant can submit only one application for the field of study Economics and Management and indicate one form of study in it (full-time or part-time).

In an application for doctoral studies, an applicant shall indicate:

  • name and surname, date and place of birth, home address;
  • a chosen study program and chosen dissertation topic;
  • a chosen form of doctoral studies (full-time/part-time).


 An applicant shall attach to an application:

  • a CV (in Slovak or English);
  • officially certified copies of higher education documents; 
  • a list of his/her published articles or a list of results of other professional or scientific activities;
  • original proof of payment of the application fee .

The Rector of BUEM shall decide on admission or non-admission of applicants on the basis of the recommendation of the admissions committee and rules approved by the Academic Senate of BUEM.

The decision on the result of the admission procedure will be sent to applicants within 30 days.

BUEM is responsible for the accuracy of data and their protection. An applicantʾs personal data may be used only for the purposes of the admission procedure and may not be provided for other purposes.

Conditions for admission to study

The basic condition for admission of an applicant to BUEM is:

  • successful completion of the second degree of studies (Master's or Engineering) in the field of study economics and management or in a related field;
  • knowledge of English.

Mandatory attachments to an application for doctoral studies are:

  • a CV (in Slovak or English); 
  • officially certified copies of higher education documents;  
  • a list of his/her published articles or a list of results of other professional or scientific activities;
  • original proof of payment of the application fee.

Instructions for certifying documents on higher education

The conditions for admission are the same for foreign applicants as for Slovak students. Applicants from abroad or applicants who have completed the second degree of university studies at a foreign university shall submit a decision on recognition of the document on education for academic purposes.

If an applicant from abroad or an applicant who has completed the second degree of university studies at a foreign university does not have a recognized document on his studies from another university in the Slovak Republic, the applicant in writing shall ask the study department of BUEM for recognition in good time, pursuant to Act No. 422/2015 on recognition of documents on education to continue the studies. The application shall be accompanied by:

  • certified photocopies of documents on education issued by a foreign university (diploma) and an official translation of that document made by a translator registered in the list of experts, interpreters and translators (hereinafter only the "list") of the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic;
  • a certified photocopy of the transcript of the completed subjects and conducted examinations and an official translation of that transcript made by a translator registered in the list;
  • a certified photocopy of the diploma supplement (if a foreign university issues it) and an official translation of that supplement made by a translator registered in the list; recommendation of the Centre for Recognition of Education Documents of Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR.

The decision on recognition of the document on education will be issued by the Ministry for Education, Science, Reseaqch and Sports of Slovak republic or BUEM after assessing the application.

The decision will be issued automatically by BUEM after submitting the above-mentioned documents in the case of studies at foreign universities with which the Slovak Republic has concluded a bilateral agreement for academic purposes.
